The Beast of Bryher!

An event created from a suggestion of a Scilly60 finisher!

The Beast of Bryher is a race to complete as many circumnavigations of the Island of Bryher within 24 hours. This huge challenge can be taken on solo, or as part of a team of up to six members.

Bryher is an island with a coast path of about 7.5km. It also passes through the beautiful Bryher Campsite which will be our base for the weekend. Some of the coast path is hilly and technical, while other bits a bit simpler.

Runners will start at 1500 on Friday 19th September, enjoying 4 hours of daylight before the sun sets then enjoying the night sounds and atmosphere by torchlight until the daylight returns 12 hours later. They will enjoy the remaining 8 hours before they are asked to stop!

This ‘running party’ has something for everyone, from those who have never run in the dark before, to those who would like to complete their first marathon, taking time to rest and sleep, to groups of friends coming to share an adventure together, to those who want to see how far they can go.

Whether you are here to run 2 or 20 laps, this race will welcome you and celebrate you!

(I don’t think 100miles is possible for a solo runner on this terrain – will anyone prove me wrong?)

Frequently Asked Questions

What will the terrain be like?

Bryher has short steep hills. 95% of the run is on the coast path or trails, with a small amount of running on road. Although the maximum elevation is only about 34m there are plenty of ups and downs throughout the 7.5km loop – it is hillier than you may think!

Is there an age limit?

Yes, you must be at least 18 to take part. There is no maximum age limit.

Can I take part in a team?

Yes, this event is all about choice, you can choose to run solo or in a team of up to 6. You can choose who runs in what order and how many laps.

Can we finish as a team on the Last lap?

Yes, from 1330 onwards, you can choose you run as your complete team so you can all cross the finish line together if you wish.

At all times before this you must run as a solo runner.

Do I have to run or can I walk?

This event is all about choices, if you have a team member that wants to walk, this is allowed. It is your event!

I am going to run solo and I don't want to camp for the extra days, can I have a discount?

The campsite has been hired for this event, camping on site is an option open to everyone, but if you choose not to take it I am afraid the price is the same.

My friends / family want to come along too. Is this possible?

Yes. Friends/family will be allowed to camp and join in. There are two options, Spectator – this will give them access to camp and cheer for the whole event. Cost TBC.

Volunteer – if they volunteer to do 4 x 2 hour shifts, then they will get free camping and access to the cooked food too.

Further information will be available by Jan 2025.

Will there be energy stations?

You should bring all your normal running food/fuel. We will have cold water, hot water, tea, coffee available throughout the event. We will also have at least 4 different hot meals available thoughout the event, more info to follow.

What happens to my kit?

If you are a solo runner, you can keep a drop bag by your chair in the race HQ. if you are in a team, you can keep your kit in your tent.

How do I get to the Isles of Scilly? Where do I stay?

You cannot drive to the islands – you will have to take a passenger ferry, plane or helicopter from Penzance/Land’s End, or a plane from Newquay or Exeter.

The event includes camping at the fabulous Bryher Campsite from Thursday to Monday.

For details on getting to the islands and where to stay if you want to extend your trip, we recommend looking at the Visit Isles of Scilly website.

What about the environment?

This is a no-litter race, and time penalties will apply for any litter found by sweepers. We will also make a minimum donation of £500 to the Isles of Scilly Wildlife Trust, which is involved with the organisation of the event.

What if my plans change? Can I defer, transfer or have a refund?

 Please read this section carefully.

Once you have entered the race, I am not able to offer any refunds.

You can transfer your place to a friend before 10th Sept.

I understand that things can change. I will accept withdrawals from the race at any time up to the 18th July 2025.

Unfortunately, I am unable to offer refunds, so if you do need to withdraw for any reason, you will be able to move your entry to the 2026 race.

You can only defer your entry once.

Any deferrals will be subject to payment of an admin / cost inflation fee payable at the point you take up your deferral place in the 2026 event. You will be sent an email of how to take up your deferral around the date that entries open for the 2026 event. Please ensure you look out for this email as you will only have one week to respond.
